I smiled as the gang brought in tray after tray of food. I knew the BJ boys would come through.
“Oh my gosh, guys,” Cole gushed in amazement. “This is way too much. Look at all this food! What am I going to do with all of it?”
“Well, I for one, plan to eat a lot of it,” Jay crowed as he helped himself to a slider, a pickle spear, chips, and a cookie. “Anything you don’t want, send with me. I am the queen of the doggy bag.”
“We’ll split it up.” Cole smiled.
“Oh! I almost forgot. I have a package for you.” Jay’s eyes lit up and he rushed outside to his car while Cody, Levi, Cole, and I could only stare after the kid.
When Jay returned, his arms were full of a large basket wrapped up in a bow, and Kennedy Marks was walking behind him.
“I went out to grab the package and came back with two.” Jay sat the basket down and turned toward Kennedy. “Something tells me this package would be a lot more fun to play with though.”
I laughed. “Down, Jay. Down, boy.” Reaching for Kennedy’s hand, I welcomed him and dodged daggers being shot at me from Cody. “Good to see you, man.”
“Thanks for the invite.” Kennedy shook my hand with a good-natured smile.
“You invited him?” Cody hissed at my ear when Kennedy turned to talk to Jay.
“No, I invited him.” Levi smiled wickedly at our best friend. “Figured if I have to put up with Jay, you can deal with having Kennedy here.”
Hoping to change the subject before the two pulled out their fists, I nodded toward the basket. “Jay, what’s in the basket?”
“I don’t know. Someone in town gave it to me and said to make sure I got it to Cole.” Jay shrugged.
“Well, you better open it.” I smiled at Cole.
Cole blushed, but dropped to his knees to pull the gigantic bow from the oversized basket. Lifting layers of tissue paper, Cole uncovered several stacks of clothing. “Oh my gosh,” he whispered.
“Whoa! Looks like someone just hit the fashion jackpot.” Jay clapped his hands.
“This is way too much. Who gave this to you?” Cole demanded.
“A true lady never tells her secrets.” Jay made a display of locking his lips and throwing away the key. “But, I think there’s a note.”
Cole pulled an envelope from inside the basket and opened it. Scanning the card his eyes immediately began to sparkle with building tears. “It’s too much,” he choked out.
I walked closer and pulled Cole to his feet. “What’s it say?” I wrapped him in my arms. Cole handed me the card, and I read it aloud.
“Dear Mr. Pierce,
We are sorry about the fire at your apartment. We took up a donation throughout town and used the money to buy you some new clothes. Figured you’d need them for school mostly.
Your Friends in Blueridge Junction”
“Awww, that’s too sweet,” Jay gushed. “Now, go try them on!”
“Come on. We’ll take the basket to your room. You can go through things later.
